An arrest warrant has been issued for a man charged with possession of firearms following a search of a property in Yaldhurst where police had to shoot a dog attacking them.
A registrar issued the warrant in the Christchurch District Court for Dean Walter Louis, a 29-year-old farm hand, who failed to appear on two charges of being in possession of .22 rifles, and intentionally obstructing a police officer.
The police closed part of Yaldhurst Road for nearly two hours as they carried out a search warrant relating to alleged dishonesty offending on Wednesday morning last week.
Police officers and a police dog were attacked by an 8-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier which was “shot and destroyed” on the property.
There were no significant injuries to the officers or the police dog, Senior Sergeant Vaughn Lapslie said at the time.
Louis was arrested on the firearms charges but then released on police bail to appear at the Court House today.
