An application for release on electronically monitored bail has been refused for a 17-year-old youth charged with the murder of an 87-year-old man in Upper Riccarton last August.
Justice Rachel Dunningham heard the application by Jonathan Eaton QC in the High Court at Christchurch today for Taniela Kotoitoga Waitokia.
The Crown alleges Waitokia was aged 16 at the time of the death of Harold Richardson in his home in Owens Terrace on the weekend of August 1 to 2, 2015. Waitokia originally appeared in the Youth Court, before the case was transferred to the High Court where no trial date has yet been set.
Waitokia was in court for today’s hearing where the Crown continued to oppose bail.
Justice Dunningham ruled against releasing Waitokia after his eight months in custody, and he is now remanded to a pre-trial hearing in the High Court on April 29.
