Court House-general1A third person has admitted a role in a ring that was scamming elderly people out of their bank cards and raiding their bank accounts.

Tayla-Dane Korau, 25, pleaded guilty to three charges of dishonestly using bank cards at an appearance by video-link before Judge Tom Gilbert in the Christchurch District Court.

The scammers’ method was to contact elderly people about a problem with a faulty bank card and then have someone call around to exchange the card for a good one – actually a gift card which they would leave behind. Funds would then be removed from the victim’s account using the bank card.

She denies three other similar charges and those charges have been remanded to a Crown case review hearing on June 13, with Korau remaining in custody.

She did not go ahead with an application for release of electronically monitored bail.

No sentencing date has been set and all the charges have been remanded to the same date. She has earlier admitted charges of breaching a community work sentence, theft, unlawfully taking a car, and breaching bail and is awaiting sentence on those, too.

Two people have already admitted being part of the scam. One is due for sentencing this week, and the other in July.
