Police car-Sept2013-01Two men facing robbery charges have been remanded in custody after their arrests at the end of a car chase brought to a stop with road spikes in Beckenham yesterday.

They have been jointly charged with the robbery of three teenage boys who were walking in the street late on Tuesday night. The charges allege the pair were armed with an imitation firearm when they took cellphones, clothing, money and cards from the boys.

Kereopa Hune, 28, a scaffolder, and Gordon Herbert, 22, of Phillipstown, have entered no pleas to the robbery charges.

Herbert is also charged with unlawfully taking a car, failing to stop for the police, driving while forbidden, reckless driving on Hoon Hay Road and assaulting a police sergeant using a car as a weapon.

Hune is also charged with getting into the car that had been unlawfully taken.

The charges arise from an incident on Wednesday in which police cars chased a red Subaru through Hoon Hay and Cashmere before it drove over road spikes at the intersection of Colombo Street and Tennyson Streets about 11.45am.

The car crashed into a pole and two men ran off. They were caught by police after a short chase on foot.

Duty lawyer Michelle Barrell asked for a remand for Herbert to enable him to get legal advice. She said no bail application would be made for him until defence counsel had been assigned.

Judge Paul Kellar remanded him in custody without plea to appear by video-link in court on February 11, when a bail application may be heard.

Defence counsel for Hune, Andrew McKenzie, said no plea would be entered and no bail application would be made today. He asked for Hune to be remanded in custody for an appearance by video-link, also on February 11, for an application for electronically monitored bail to be made. The remand was granted by Judge Kellar.
