An additional carjacking charge has been laid against Dunedin man Michael John Hughes after police arrested him in Canterbury on Wednesday at the end of a manhunt.

Hughes, 36, who has a large tattoo of a fist on the right side of his face, was being sought for several theft charges relating to incidents in Blenheim, Christchurch, Oamaru, and Dunedin.

Police had been searching for him since late May when they advised members of the public not to approach him.

He appeared before Judge Gary MacAskill in the Christchurch District Court today and at the request of duty lawyer David Stringer was remanded back to the Dunedin court on June 29.

Mr Stringer said no bail application was being made, and Hughes remains in custody.

A new charge of robbing a man of a car at Mosgiel, west of Dunedin, on March 27, along with two other men, was laid for today’s appearance. He entered no plea.
