Bail has been refused for a Leeston man arrested at the weekend for a series of shoplifting charges, including stealing an $18,000 night vision unit from Gun City in Papanui.
James Edward George Jones, 31, was charged with the Gun City theft and was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court two weeks ago.
The duty lawyer on that day said he came to the Court House but then apparently left after hearing that the police planned to have him held in custody rather than remaining on bail.
He has since been arrested on more shoplifting charges, and has been held in custody since last weekend.
Defence counsel Ruth Harcourt applied for bail for Jones yesterday, but Judge Brian Callaghan refused and remanded him in custody for an appearance by video-link from the prison on February 18. Jones has entered no pleas to the three charges of shoplifting and one of theft.
