No bail application was made for a 31-year-old man charged with a series of Christchurch robberies, when he appeared by video-link in the Christchurch District Court today.

Lennon Donald Auckram, of Redwood, initially appeared on the video-screen in court with his face down out of sight, and Judge Brian Callaghan did not start proceedings until he got a response from him and could be sure it was the correct person.

Auckram eventually acknowledged who he was and sat with his face partly covered by his hands during the brief appearance.

Auckram was remanded in custody to June 24.

Defence counsel Chris Nolan said no bail application was being made and sought the remand on the 17 charges without plea.

The charges alleged robberies of the KFC at the Airport while armed with a metal bar, attempted robbery of the Little Brown Jug bar in Wairakei Road, assault using a bat as a weapon, and demanding “guns” from a woman with intent to steal them.

He also faces earlier charges of burglary while armed with a spade at Swannanoa, unlawfully taking and interfering with cars, dangerous driving, assaulting police using a car as a weapon, intentional damage of a window, and two charges of failing to stop for the police.
