Police car-Sept2013-03A man accused of intentionally injuring a police officer during an incident in which three cars were stopped at Cheviot, North Canterbury, has denied the charge and chosen trial by jury.

Police allege that Adam Travis, 40, of Aranui, punched the officer three times in a confrontation after the three cars were stopped by police on their way back to Christchurch from Kaikoura on March 20.

Bail was refused for Travis at his first appearance on March 21, and family and supporters burst into barking in court as he was remanded in custody.

Defence counsel Kiran Paima told the court there was a not guilty plea when Travis appeared in the Christchurch District Court today by video-link from the prison. He said Travis elected jury trial.

Judge Tony Couch remanded Travis in custody for a case review hearing on May 23, the next step on the way to trial.
